How it works
Most people don’t need a site visit to find out whether a crack is a problem. A good photo tells us a lot. Text one to our number, at the top of every page, fill in the form on this page, and we’ll reply with what we see and what we’d recommend.
Taking a useful photo
- A wide shot showing the whole wall, so we can see where the crack is and which way it runs.
- A close-up with a tape measure or coin beside the crack for scale.
- Any water or staining, like white chalky lines or damp patches.
- The outside, if you can see the same crack on the exterior wall.
What we look for
- Direction. Vertical, diagonal, stair-step or horizontal. Horizontal cracks may relate to soil pressure and are particularly concerning.
- Width. Small hairline cracks may not be a concern. Larger cracks, or cracks that are widening, suggest movement.
- Water. A crack that leaks needs sealing even if it isn’t structural.
- Change over time. If you’ve watched it grow, tell us.
Our guide is my foundation crack serious? explains each type.
What you get
A plain answer: watch it, seal it, or have it assessed structurally. If it needs work, you get a written price. If it doesn’t, we’ll tell you how to keep an eye on it.
Check before the snow
Exterior cracks are hard to see once snow cover sets in, and won’t be visible again until spring. In the fall, walk around the house and photograph what you can see. See inspect your foundation before winter.
